Christmas

Slinky!
I loved having Gramma visit for Christmas day.
Can you believe Momma made this rocking horse for me in her woodshop?!
She's so cool!
It was fun spending time with my city cousin, Jack on Christmas Eve when we visited family in Massachusetts.

I love climbing on top of things!
It was fun to spend the night at Nana and Papa's house the night before Christmas Eve.
I love snow!
Do you like my makeshift digerido?
Grandpa came to visit to celebrate early Christmas and we read one of my favorite books together.

Hope everyone had a great Christmas!

Santa

So, we made an impromptu stop at the dreaded mall yesterday to see if we could get a photo of Rory with Santa. It was one of those things that I couldn't decide whether or not to do. On one hand, it seems like the type of thing you're just supposed to do as parents, and you are "supposed" to have that photo, even if the kid is screaming because you threw him on some strangers lap and then walked away. I find those photos sort of hysterical when its other people's kids screaming on Santa's lap, but somehow doing that to my own child felt sort of like unnecessary torture for him (and us). He's been super attached lately and I just wasn't sure if it would be any fun for him. And, if it wasn't going to be any fun, why on earth would we torture ourselves with a trip to the mall at this time of year when we don't generally enter the mall doors ANY time of year. After thinking it through all week, I still hadn't come up with a clear answer as to whether we should go or not. I looked for another opportunity to sit on Santa's lap that would not involve going to the mall, but apparently I looked a bit too late. It seemed that most of the alternative venues for seeing Santa that were open to the public were either really expensive or had already gone past. We went out to lunch yesterday after running errands and purchasing our new woodstove for the new house and Rory was so good at the restaurant. He had taken a nice nap in the car while we ran errands and he was happy and then he ate nearly an entire cheese and bean quesadilla, so he was well fed...and suddenly it just hit me that we had to go see Santa and that this was the time to do it. I felt like all signs pointed to a non-meltdown situation. He was well fed, well napped and in a good mood. I broke the news to Bev on our way out of the restaurant and I thought she was going to shoot fire out of her eyes with the look she gave me. She was not at all happy with the idea of heading to the mall to stand in a line when we had so much to do at home. I think she thought I was trying to avoid our "clean out the attic" adventure which was scheduled for that afternoon. I offered to take her home first, but finally she came around to the idea that this was something we really probably should do and that if we were going to do it, now was as good a time as any, although I'm fairly sure there was some under her breath swearing about the mall and standing in lines. Hopefully Santa didn't hear. :)

It went about as well as we could have expected. There was a huge train set up next to Santa so that while you're waiting in line you can watch the trains go around and Rory was entertained enough by that not to freak out. We had waited about 15 minutes when we noticed the sign that said "Santa feeds the reindeer from 2-3pm"...it was 1:45. We were definitely not going to be waiting an hour for Santa to return from his break if we didn't make it before 2, but I had high hopes that we'd get in. The poor woman in front of us left the line a few minutes before 2 feeling like she wasn't going to make it and it wasn't worth waiting. Just a few minutes later they came around and closed the line off 1 family behind us. We barely made it before his break. Otherwise, this picture would not exist at all. We are not the type of people who would enjoy killing time at the mall. Good thing we didn't have to. When Rory got up to Santa, the woman taking the photos wasn't quite ready for us, so I put him down on the floor next to Santa and we looked at the free coloring books that Santa was giving out. He was excited about the idea of "reading" a book and handed several of them (all the same book) to Santa, so when the lady was back behind her camera, we threw him onto Santa's lap and said "Have Santa read you a book". He looked a bit unhappy at first, but then he was just so confused by us stepping back and him being on this guy's lap and the lady behind the camera yelling to him with some crazy colorful, parrot puppet that he just got a confused look on his face and sat there staring. Finally we coaxed a tiny smirk out of him and figured that was about the best we were going to do in the situation. All in all it was probably only 30 minutes of our day, and I'm glad we have a photo with Santa to show for it, but next year we will definitely be seeking out a less Mall-like atmosphere for our Santa photos.

Oh Christmas Tree, O Christmas Tree...

We got our Christmas tree last weekend. We went to a place down the street from us in Windham, where we usually go and cut down our own tree. I thought this year Rory would have lots of fun helping to pick out the tree and walking around in between all the trees, but he was much more interested in the tractor that was running in the field behind us. Oh well, at least he was happy. :)
This one Mama, this one!!!

I saw a good tree somewhere...where'd it go?

Tractors are so cool.

What is Mom doing to that tree??

Mama B finishing off the cut with a smile

We decorated later that weekend and Rory was very helpful. He helped put ornaments on the bottom of the tree and he was fascinated by the star on top. His vocabulary is exploding lately. His new words include star (as heard in video), bus, fall down (which happens a lot), box, ball, and, most pathetic of all, he says "I sad" now when he's waiting for his bottle to warm up and its not ready. So, here's the video of Rory helping decorate the Christmas tree. Hope everyone is enjoying the holiday season so far.

Dr Rory in his new sweater

Rory absolutely loves his new sweater that Nana made him. I can't believe he's big enough to fit into it already. We inherited a doctor set from a friend at work and he's been having so much fun pretending to be a doctor. Sometimes I think he's just wears the stethescope as an accessory.

In other news this week, he has gotten 3 new teeth sometime in the last few days/weeks/who knows, but all of a sudden they are there, bringing the grand total to 9 teeth. Crazy. He's growing up.

Dancing to The Boss

Rory loves to dance, especially to Bruce Springsteen.
He gets a bit carried away sometimes, check out the video and watch to the end, it's worth it.

Halloween as a dog...

Rory had a great Halloween. He was a dalmation and I think he really understood the fact that he was a dog and he LOVED it. He kept looking at his paw and pointing and saying "dog" and getting very excited about it.
He had just as much fun playing in the leaves as he did trick or treating.
His favorite part of the night was climbing up people's stairs and running around on their porches. He did like the candy part. He wanted to take several pieces at each house, but we tried to keep him to only one. He also thought that since the first house we went to was our friend's house and we went inside to have dinner with them, that we went inside of all the houses that opened the doors. It was very funny to see him take a piece of candy at the first house and walk past the woman into the foyer as if he was home.
At my work party, he figured out how to eat an entire piece of pizza by himself.
He had a blast running the hallways and checking out the conference rooms.
He was very intrigued by the dalmation hanging on the wall at work. He actually seemed to understand that it was the same as his costume. He pointed at the wall, then pointed at his own paw and said "dog" several times, then cracking up laughing. It was super cute.
Serious dog.

My first hair cut...

Rory got to meet Knaughty Sarah this weekend and got his first hair cut. It was just a tiny trim around the ears, but it makes me feel like he's such a big guy now.

I'm not sure he really liked it or disliked it, but he was certainly fascinated by the whole thing. He watched Mama B get her hair cut after he sat in the chair and he thought that was a bit more interesting than his own hair cut. Overall he did really well though. We aren't ready to give the back of his hair a real hair cut yet...I love the way its growing all scraggly at the ends now.

Lots of firsts in October

Rory has had quite the month in October...

He's learning to share with baby Bayla. We've started trading daycare 2 days a week with our new neighbors and its been so much fun to watch the 2 kids interact.
He loves to wear Mama B's slippers.

He got his first toothbrush
Usually he likes to watch me brush my teeth first, then he tries out his own.

Catching up with Rory

So, I was just scanning through the photos on our camera and realized that there are tons of fun ones that I have yet to put up on the blog. Also, I've realized that we've done a lot of fun things this month like apple picking and hiking, learning how to use a spoon and cheering for the Patriots, walking the dog and finding a new musical instrument in the kitchen. Here is a slew of photos so everyone can catch up with Rory...meanwhile, we're just trying to keep up with him at home. He's EVERYWHERE...and so much fun.
Do you like my shirt?

Can I play with these while you cook?

Bang, bang, bang...I love noise

Did you like my song?

What's out there?!

At the top...bagged it!!

He had to touch as many trees as he could...made for a long climb up.
He loves riding in the wagon.

Our little farm boy driving the tractor.

Silly face.

Go Pats!!

Do you like my hat?!

Eating with a spoon is tiring.

YUMMMMM!!!

Oh...there's a spoon in my bowl.

Can someone put the game on? I can't find the clicker.
